Today I submitted a series of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to multiple U.S. government agencies seeking records related to negotiations involving the United States, Iran, and Israel prior to the recent escalation of military conflict in the region.
The requests were filed with the following agencies:
- U.S. Department of State
- Department of Defense
- Office of the Director of National Intelligence
- Central Intelligence Agency
These requests seek records including communications, meeting summaries, intelligence assessments, policy briefings, and other documents relating to diplomatic discussions with Iran and any related developments involving Israel.
In particular, the requests seek information concerning negotiations or communications involving U.S. representatives and officials of Iran and Israel prior to the escalation of hostilities.
Transparency is essential in a democracy, especially when decisions may lead to international conflict or involve the lives of civilians and service members. The Freedom of Information Act provides a mechanism for citizens to request government records so that the public can better understand how major policy decisions are made.
The requests ask each agency to search for records including emails, memoranda, intelligence reports, briefing materials, call logs, and other communications related to negotiations and discussions involving Iran and Israel beginning January 1, 2024.
